Terms of Service
This page currently covers items Tote Mode will not accept for storage or transport. Additional terms may be added as we grow. By using our service, you agree not to place restricted items in any tote we deliver, pick up, store, or return.
Restricted items
To keep customers, drivers, and our facility safe, the following may not be stored with Tote Mode. This list mirrors common self-storage restrictions, with one important difference: we also prohibit firearms and ammunition (even though some traditional storage facilities allow them).
Weapons & related
- Firearms of any kind (handguns, rifles, shotguns, etc.)
- Ammunition, gunpowder, primers, and reloading supplies
- Explosives, fireworks, and flares
Hazardous & flammable materials
- Gasoline, propane, butane, and other fuels or fuel containers
- Oil, solvents, paint thinners, and flammable liquids
- Chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and pool chemicals
- Acids, corrosives, and toxic substances
- Asbestos or materials known to contain asbestos
- Compressed gas cylinders (including welding gases)
Perishables & living things
- Food, beverages, and other perishable goods
- Plants, soil, and agricultural products that can spoil or attract pests
- Live animals, insects, or animal remains
Illegal or prohibited property
- Stolen property
- Illegal drugs, drug paraphernalia, and controlled substances
- Any item whose possession or storage is illegal under federal, Texas, or local law
Size & service scope
- Anything that will not fit in the totes we provide
- Furniture (couches, mattresses, tables, dressers, etc.)
- Appliances (refrigerators, washers, dryers, stoves, TVs too large for a tote, etc.)
- Other oversized household goods outside our tote-based service
Other excluded items
- Cash, coin collections, bullion, and negotiable instruments
- Jewelry, gems, and high-value precious metals (use specialized storage)
- Important original documents you cannot replace (wills, deeds, titles) — keep copies elsewhere; we recommend not storing irreplaceable originals
- Wet, leaking, moldy, or heavily soiled items
- Tires, batteries (including lithium packs for tools/e-bikes), and similar automotive waste
- Anything that emits fumes, odors, or residue that could damage other customers\' property
If you are unsure whether an item is allowed, email us before packing: totemode@totemodeservices.com. We may refuse pickup or return items that violate this list.
Insurance & coverage
Tote Mode provides limited coverage of up to $100 per tote for loss or damage while your sealed totes are in our care for storage or transport, subject to the exclusions on this page and any future full terms we publish.
Valuable items are not restricted solely because of their value — you may pack items worth more than $100 in a tote. However, our coverage still caps at $100 for that tote. If a tote’s contents are worth more than $100, any amount above that limit is not covered by Tote Mode.
For higher-value goods, we strongly recommend you carry your own insurance (for example, a renters or homeowners policy endorsement, or separate personal property coverage) and avoid placing irreplaceable or high-value items in storage with us unless you are comfortable with the $100-per-tote limit.
